Hello,
I had a white line in my output. At first I thought it was dirt or a defective or dirty mirror or toner cartridge. Replaced toner and no help. So I opened the hp 6p C3980A printer to give it a good cleaning and to check for any trace of what could be causing the white line. Once the printer was apart I noticed that the white line was only in the shaded or gray areas in graphics, not in the black printed text. So I decided it could not be dirt or a scratch of some kind and put it back together again.

Once it was back together of course it would not work. It only lights the one error light on top, with the lightning bolt next to it. All docs say it means open cover or missing toner but I don't think so in my case. If toner is in and cover closed and I press the Go button the lights flash as if it is trying to print but then goes back to the error light. If I open cover and/or remove toner nothing happens when I press the Go button so this seems to indicate that both the cover open and toner missing switches are working OK. When I first turn on the power I hear nothing. I think I used to hear a motor or fan turn on with the power but now nothing.

Richard:
Ok your original problem with the light text has a good chance of being scanner motor or transfer roller if the toner cartridge has been tested good. Your new problem could be one of three things no toner, cover open, or paper jam. First check that the cover open switch found under the toner door on upper left side is being triggered properly by tab that comes down on it when toner door is closed. If so I would tend to believe there is a sensor in the paper path that is jammed, dislodged or unhooked. If you removed the bottom main board to look at something there is a very good chance that the paper sensor is dislodged there as it can fall out easily when the board is removed.
